    Board Closing - What is the future of Cooldown?

    Hello Everyone, Just to reiterate what @Spirited said today, thank you so much for being a part of Cooldown. This forum was created to give developers a good place to work with each other on a shared passion. However, I think Spirited covered that nicely and I completely feel the same way. I also wanted to point out that I will be stepping away from the community as a staff member. I enjoyed every second of working on this community with everyone. I will likely be around in the future, but not in a staff position. In one week we will put the forum in maintenance mode and start the backup. I might keep the forum in maintenance mode for a while just so people that link to the forum do not think it is just down. Thanks, Smallxmac

    Glad to see you here, I have a very similar story as you do. I have always been a firm believer that learning by example or by a project is one of the best ways to go. Seems like you are learning a lot of the same stuff I have been using in my day to day job. It sure is a lot of fun.

    I honestly would not bother if you with making a text editor. I would start the projects with the intention of making a visual editor. However, if you wanted to have a text editor I would just make a VS Code plugin that can interact with the CLI and possibly do validation/linting. I have used this in the past to make enterprise applications. One plus side is that you can have very rapid development and easy deployment. That being said, I have never attempted something similar to this. I would image a visual map editor would be rather difficult in a web framework, as it does not quite fit the standard model. I maybe would investigate Qt.

  7. I can't say I have much experience with any networking libraries in C++, but I have worked with QT before. As others have stated above, Qt is pretty known and has quite a bit of documentation. I have done something similar to what @Spirited did with RPC. I just had my program use gRPCs to communicate with the web front-end. However, it seems like from reading this thread QT might be your best bet if you don't want to spend too much time learning new stuff for marginal gains.

    Ah yes exactly, I just thought it would be a fun thought exercise if anything. This entire project, in general, is just overkill, to be honest, but it is fun none the less. I completely agree that this is an awesome exercise in a hard distributed computing problem that should hit all the hard parts of communication, data syncing and scaling.

    I like your approach. You follow some of the ideas that I derived when I was prototyping a scalable environment. One of the biggest concerns I had was the number of entities on a particular map. One thing I thought about was chunking regions and having nodes to handle that, but you would then just scale the issue lower. For example, the bottleneck would then be on the number of players in a particular chuck. You would also have to handle cross chunk communication and they are visible. Another idea I had was possibly scaling channels. For example, if too many people are in TC and it proves to be a bottleneck it might be an option to start a new TC map and move players to that instance. The main problem I found with that is separating the players, in some cases that might not be a possibility (GW). This is just all assuming there was a bottleneck to begin with, this is all just for thought really. What are your ideas on such an issue? If said issue is present, how would you overcome it?

It would be nice to have your perspective as a GFX artist in a primary programmer community. How is your server going? What are some of the challenges you ran into when getting back into the community?

    How will you determine the scalability or what metrics would require a new realm node to spawn?

    It looks like there is a large number of internal communication. Are you concerned with latency issues? Also, it seems that every module is dependent on other modules, how will you handle the reliability of modules? I would imagine some clever heathchecks with k8n would be a good place to start.
